ERE certificates: your charger pays more
Oil companies are legally required to offset their CO₂ emissions. They do this partly by reimbursing the charging costs of electric drivers through a market mechanism: ERE certificates (Emission Reduction Units). For every kWh charged through your certified charger, you receive a certificate that is sold to oil companies. This is not a government subsidy but an obligation enshrined in law.
Your charger must have a built-in MID-certified metering module. An externally mounted meter does not qualify for participation.
There is no maximum number of participants and no restriction on charging your own vehicle. The scheme came into effect on 1 January 2026.
If you want to qualify for ERE certificates, you should specifically choose a charger with a built-in MID meter. Not every model includes this as standard. We can advise you on which options are available.
Participation runs through an inboekdienstverlener, a registered booking service provider. They log your charging sessions, file the annual report of charged kWh and pay out the compensation. What an ERE is worth depends on the market price and varies per period; your provider publishes the current rate.
The ERE scheme is new (active since 2026). The exact payout cycle and settlement of the first periods are still ongoing at the time of writing. Ask your installer for the latest information.
